UPDATE is Scotland's national disability information service. They provide a range of services to information providers throughout Scotland. They are a recognised Scottish charity and a company limited by guarantee. Their core funding is provided by the Scottish Executive, and through membership subscriptions and fundraising.
Aim
Their aim is to improve the quality of life for disabled people in Scotland by enabling information providers to offer accurate, up-to-date and relevant disability-related information.
To achieve this, their key objectives are:
- to provide members with cost effective national disability and impairment related reference information;
- to encourage and support good practice in disability information and advice services.
Their services are mainly available to subscribing members. Their membership includes local, regional and national voluntary sector organisations as well as numerous public sector agencies, including universities, health boards and various social work departments.
They provide a helpline for members of the public and non-member organisations, as well as a transcription service (braille, audio, large print, CD etc). They also provide basic information and for more detailed enquiries will signpost to the most appropriate contact.
The authors and editors of this article are employed to create accurate and up to date content reflecting reliable research evidence, guidance and best clinical practice. They are free from any commercial conflicts of interest. Find out more about updating.
