The Scottish Centre for Children with Motor Impairments (SCCMI) is one of Scotland's Grant Aided Special Schools receiving funds directly from the Scottish Government. The Centre provides educational and therapy services for children, young people and their families affected by cerebral palsy and related conditions.
The children/young people with whom the Centre engages are those with an age range of birth to 19 years, who have a wide range of disabilities and who reside in all parts of Scotland.
Children and young people affected by cerebral palsy and related conditions may be affected by disorders of movement and posture, activity limitation, disturbances of sensation, perception, cognition, communication and behaviour, functional abilities (also described as life skills, activities of daily living, independence-related activities), learning difficulties and secondary musculoskeletal problems.
SCCMI therefore aims to address the educational needs, psychomotor and life skills development of children affected by cerebral palsy and related conditions in a holistic manner, with primary teachers, physiotherapists and other staff working in close partnership. The Centre's approach integrates educational and physical activities, to address each child's intellectual, physical, social and practical needs and to maximise independence.
A range of programmes are offered for the youngest children (from birth) to programmes for teenagers up to 19 years. Each major programme has a different emphasis but all are characterised by substantial parental engagement and address the child/young person's education, movement, life skills and communication. The major programmes/services offered include:
