Respond works with children and adults with learning disabilities who have experienced abuse or trauma, as well as those who have abused others, through psychotherapy, advocacy, campaigning and other support. Respond also aims to prevent abuse by providing training, consultancy and research.
Respond provides psychotherapy for people with learning disabilities, advice and support for staff and families, training for carers and professionals, education for people with learning disabilities, influencing generic services in order to make their services accessible, influencing learning disability services to consider the psychological impact of living with learning disabilities, undertaking research and disseminating their findings.
Referrals for psychotherapy are usually made through social services or NHS trusts for people who might have experienced the following:
- Bereavement and loss
- Family breakdown
- Sexual abuse
- Domestic violence
- Neglect
- Emotional deprivation or abuse
- Physical abuse
- Trauma through illness
