The purpose of REMAP (Scotland) is to design, manufacture and supply “one-off” items of mechanical, electrical or electronic equipment, which assist disabled people to overcome specific problems encountered in their daily lives.

The charity functions through 14 voluntary, multi-disciplinary Panels covering most of Scotland. Panel members are mainly occupational therapists or engineers, the latter tasked with designing and manufacturing equipment for individuals when no suitable commercially produced alternatives are available.

Referrals are accepted from health professionals, social workers and other community workers and, of course, direct from individuals. Volunteers make no charge for their services, or the equipment supplied, although if referrals are initiated by the NHS or local authorities, they usually reimburse Panels for material and mileage costs.

Four examples of completed projects can be found on their website www.remap-scotland.org. Many others can be found in The Remapedia, a UK wide listing produced by REMAP, their English equivalent http://www.remap-internet.org.uk/remapedia/tiki-index.php including:

  • Adaptations of car indicator controls.
  • Machine to turn book pages for MS sufferer.
  • Tricycle for young girl with problems in both legs.
  • Lifting/transfer bar to aid transfer from bed to wheelchair.

Contact should be made with the nearest Panel in the first instance. In case of difficulty, or for more general issues, contact the National Organiser.

Contact details can be found on the website (see above).
