The National Institute of Medical Herbalists is the UK's leading professional organisation of practitioners of herbal medicine, or phytotherapy. It is a company limited by guarantee and was founded in 1864.

The Institute exists to maintain high standards of practice and patient care in herbal medicine, to promote awareness of the benefits that herbal medicine can offer in the treatment of ill health and the maintenance of good health, and to develop further research into the safety and efficacy of plant medicines and herbal practice.

All members are governed by a comprehensive code of ethics and disciplinary procedure, and membership automatically includes full professional indemnity insurance. Members have the opportunity to take part in the Institute's postgraduate education programme which includes lectures, seminars, refresher training and educational activities at an annual conference.
