The Movement Centre is a small national charity that provides Targeted Training - a therapy that develops functional skills required for head control and sitting, and where possible standing and walking in children with cerebral palsy and other problems of movement control.
Referrals to The Movement Centre is usually via a GP or paediatrician and wherever possible NHS funding is sought.
An assessment is carried out to determine each child's potential to benefit from Targeted Training, during which functional goals are set.
Specialist equipment is loaned to the family for the 9 month course of Targeted Training so activities can be performed at home, usually for half an hour 5 or 6 days a week.
Review appointments are carried out at The Movement Centre every 8 weeks to monitor progress and set new goals if appropriate.
The principle activities of The Movement Centre are:
- The provision of Targeted Training therapy to improve movement control
- Teaching and publishing techniques developed to improve movement control thus educating families and clinicians
- Research and development of methods of improving movement control
