The HIV Support Centre was established in 1986 as the AIDS Helpline Northern Ireland by a group of friends who recognised a desperate need for information on HIV, locally. The original advice and information service was provided by volunteers, one evening a week. Gradually the work expanded into information talks and training and also into the support of those living and affected by HIV.

They have two main areas of work - information and support. The mainstay of the information programme is the freephone telephone helpline which operates Monday to Friday. Alongside this is their training and information provision to individuals, community and voluntary groups as well as statutory agencies.

The HIV Support Centre has three main services which deal with education and prevention. The telephone helpline service, training service and information service. Collectively these services provide information on HIV, AIDS and general sexual health to thousands of people each year.
