Cued Speech Association UK

The Cued Speech Association UK offers information, support and training for parents and professionals.

Cued Speech is a simple sound-based system comprising eight hand-shapes used in four positions near the mouth, in conjunction with lip patterns so as to make all the sounds of spoken language fully comprehensible to deaf and hearing-impaired people.

Cued Speech gives an exact visual representation of spoken language at the same time as normal speech. Deaf people can then see spoken language in the same way as hearing people hear it. This helps deaf children to develop their inner language and improve literacy, lip-reading and speech. It can also help deafened people communicate in English and D-deaf people (British Sign Language-using community) who want to improve their English. In addition it can be effective in helping hearing people with speech and language difficulties. It can be used with an aural approach or in addition to sign language.

The Association will provide information to enquirers and has for sale books about Cued Speech, information videos and instructional videos. Most information is free to parents of deaf children.
