Chest, Heart & Stroke Scotland improves the quality of life for people in Scotland affected by chest, heart and stroke illness, through medical research, influencing public policy, advice and information, and support in the community.
CHSS provides:
- The advice line which provides confidential, independent advice by trained nurses and support to people with chest, heart and stroke illness, their families, carers and health professionals throughout Scotland.
- Affiliated chest, heart and stroke support groups/clubs across Scotland.
- Personal support grants to individuals and families in financial difficulty as a result of chest, heart or stroke illness.
- Volunteer stroke service providing support to people who have had a stroke, particularly those with communication problems.
- Research grants.
- Awareness campaigns e.g. 'FAST' raising awareness of the signs and symptoms of stroke.
The following services are available in some NHS boards, but not yet all:
- CHSS stroke nurses provide support in the community for stroke patients and their families.
- Stroke training courses for staff and online training at: www.stroketraining.org
- Benefits advisors assist with applications and appeals.
- Heart failure support service provides volunteer support for those living with social isolation.
- Young stroke support worker provides specialised support for those still in work and/or with children.
- Voices Scotland; providing training and helping patients/carers to have their say on the NHS.
