Black Women's Rape Action Project (BWRAP) provides practical self-help support services and counselling to Black women, and other women of colour including immigrant and refugee women and girls who: have been raped or sexually assaulted in their country of origin; face sexual harassment at work or in other areas; have experienced domestic violence, racist attacks or rape and sexual abuse by people in authority, including in institutions, by police or military forces.
Services include providing a safe environment for support, counselling and practical help with:
- Asylum and immigration claims
- Claiming compensation
- Health care referral
- Finding secure housing or a refuge
- Claiming benefits and services
- Reporting to the police
- Arranging protection from further attack
- Getting legal aid
- Preparing for and attending court
BWRAP makes visible the needs, and experiences and particular obstacles faced by black women and other women of colour when trying to escape a violent situation and reach a ‘place of safety’. They research and highlight legislation and policies which have a detrimental effect on such women, increasing their vulnerability to rape and other violence.
