Bipolar Scotland has the following aims:
- To provide information, advice, support and education to people with bipolar disorder, their friends, relatives and carers, and professionals.
- To promote, develop and co-ordinate a network of self-help groups throughout Scotland.
- To reduce stigma by improving knowledge and understanding of bipolar disorder.
- To encourage research into all aspects of bipolar disorder.
Contact the above address or visit their website for membership information and details of local self-help groups. Bipolar Scotland offers the following services:
- Self help groups are open to those with bipolar disorder, their friends, relatives and carers. A group can offer support, information, understanding and friendship, a place to share experiences and realise individuals are not alone in what can often be a bewildering situation. No appointment or referral is needed, just turn up and learn from people who understand, in a supportive environment.
- Publications: leaflets, booklets and books covering all aspects of bipolar disorder are available. Bipolar Scotland's own publications include: Living with Bipolar Disorder; Dealing with Depression; Handling a High; Information for Family & Friends; Planning Ahead with an Advance Statement;[i] Why did my world have to change? (guide for teenagers coping with a parent who has Bipolar); Rosie's Mum (a booklet for very young children). Publications can now be downloaded direct from their website.
- Practical help: where a direct service cannot be provided, Bipolar Scotland can give information on other agencies who can help. These include counselling services, crisis helplines, patients' rights and legal advice. Bipolar Scotland tries to ensure that if it cannot help, a contact will be provided who can.
- Self Management Training - an intensive course over a long weekend teaching individuals to take control of their condition.
