The Billings Ovulation Method (BOM) teaches a woman to recognise and interpret her natural signs of fertility and infertility through all her changing life stages from puberty to the menopause, including regular and irregular cycles, breastfeeding and the climacteric (the pre-menopause years). It is easy to learn and is successful when learned and used by a couple to avoid pregnancy and often has beneficial effects on the relationship.

The BOM is also very effective in helping couples to achieve pregnancy naturally. It teaches couples to recognise when they are most fertile, giving them the best chance of achieving pregnancy. Developed by Doctors John and Evelyn Billings 55 years ago it has since been scientifically researched and validated by scientists around the world.

When a woman learns the BOM, she learns to recognise and understand her signs of fertility and infertility. She does this by observing the presence or absence of mucus at the vulva which is a direct reflection of her hormone levels. This mucus, produced by the cervix, is essential for fertility. Sperm cells depend on it for their survival and ability to reach and fertilise an egg.

If there are no psychological or medical conditions preventing pregnancy, advice about timing of intercourse to coincide with this mucus provides the greatest success. The BOM can often assist in identifying an infertility problem which can be amenable to treatment by a specialist.

In a recent group of 207 women, who were previously classified as infertile, 65% achieved pregnancy after learning the BOM to identify their peak fertility. Unsuccessful IVF attempts do not necessarily mean you cannot achieve pregnancy naturally. Knowledge of your optimal fertility may be all that is needed.
