The Michael Palin Centre for Stammering Children was opened in 1993 as a national centre for children and young adults who stammer. Referrals may be made by the local speech and language therapist or by the GP. Over 200 young people are referred each year from all parts of the UK to the centre for specialist assessment and advice. This service is funded by a charity, the Association for Research into Stammering in Childhood, and there is no charge to the family. Where a therapy programme is recommended, this may be carried out by the local speech and language therapist, or if necessary at The Michael Palin Centre. Therapy may be on an individual or group basis, and is usually funded through the NHS.
The team at the centre also carries out a comprehensive teaching programme for speech and language therapists in the assessment and treatment of young people who stammer. Details may be found on the website.
