The National Institute of Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE) is the independent organisation responsible for providing national guidance on the promotion of good health and the prevention and treatment of ill health.

NICE was preceded by the National Institute of Clinical Excellence, which was set up in 1999 and also known as NICE. The function of another NHS organisation, the Health Development Agency (HDA), were transferred to NICE on 1st April 2005.
