Paget's disease, or osteitis deformans, is a chronic bone disorder which occurs when the normal process of bone formation becomes abnormal resulting in dense but fragile bones.

The National Association for the Relief of Paget's Disease (often known as the Paget's Disease Association and NARPD) was founded in 1973 and exists for sufferers of the disease, their families and friends. Its main aims are as follows:

  • To support and offer information to those suffering from Paget's disease and their relatives or carers.
  • To encourage and assist research into the causes and treatment of the disease.
  • To raise awareness of the disease among the medical profession and the public at large.

NARPD can help sufferers by the following:

  • Answering general enquiries, particularly to those who have recently been diagnosed.
  • Directing them to appropriate treatment - the association has built up a list of consultants working in the UK.
  • Offering NARPD membership to receive regular information and participate in local support groups.
  • Working to raise awareness of Paget's disease.
  • Encouraging and helping to fund research.

NARPD produces a quarterly newsletter, fundraising items and publications including:

  • Paget's Disease of Bone - Its Nature and Management (A Guide for Patients)
  • General Information for patients suffering from Paget's Disease of Bone
  • The Treatment of Paget's Disease of Bone and Paget's disease: your questions answered

PS - Health and Poverty

Perhaps the biggest cause of ill health in the world is poverty. Help to Make Poverty History. For example, why not lend some of your money to disadvantaged communities to enable them to trade their way out of poverty through schemes such as Shared Interest.

See also MAKEPOVERTYHISTORY North East for details and links to campaigns against poverty.
