The Macular Disease Society is a specialist charity formed in 1987 to provide information, help, support and advice to sufferers of macular degeneration, health professionals and members of the public. Macular degeneration is the most common cause of registered blindness in the UK and results in loss of central vision, including certain bands of colour vision.
The Society offers a range of support and information services to those newly diagnosed or otherwise concerned about the condition. It has produced an informative "Guide to Macular Degeneration", which explains what macular degeneration is, the risk factors, what can be done to protect the eyes, together with practical help.
The Society promotes membership. Members receive a quarterly magazine, Side View, and a yearly journal, Digest, produced in both large print and cassette. It offers members access to a series of leaflets on topics such as daily living skills, low vision aids and preparing for the future.
There are over 150 local self help groups throughout the UK which depend on the enthusiasm and dedication of volunteer group leaders. Members are encouraged to join their local group for mutual support and to share experiences in order to help build confidence and independence.
The Society sponsors and monitors research into the causes and treatments for macular disease. It also actively lobbies for fair access to new treatments and low vision services.
Conferences are held, with guest speakers and exhibitions of equipment, at various UK venues throughout the year.
