Osteopaths specialise in the diagnosis, treatment, prevention and rehabilitation of certain musculoskeletal conditions, including guidance on diet, lifestyle and exercise. Problems commonly arise in the musculoskeletal system through injury, disease or abuse and misuse.
There are currently over 3,500 osteopaths working all around the UK treating a wide variety of conditions including pain in the low back, tension headaches and many types of joint strain. Osteopaths work with their hands using a wide variety of treatment techniques. These may include soft tissue techniques designed to improve the mobility and the range of movement of a joint. Gentle release techniques are widely used, particularly when treating children or older patients.
By law, osteopaths must be registered with the General Osteopathic Council (GOsC) in order to practise osteopathy in the UK. This ensures that only practitioners meeting the highest standards of safety and competency can practise. Through the GOsC website, or by telephoning the council, you can access the Register of Osteopaths, for a list of local practitioners.
