Ekbom syndrome is more commonly know as restless legs syndrome. It is believed to afflict 5% of the population. The crawling or bubbling sensation (which can include ache, cramp, jerking, numbness, weakness of the legs, tickling and running pains) can also sometimes be felt in the feet, thighs, trunk and arms. The sensations can begin as soon as the sufferer sits or lies down. Although the symptoms may vary, the one consistent factor is that the sensations can be relieved by moving the legs. Relief is usually short lived leading to the need for constant movement.
The Ekbom Support Group was set up in 1988 by Mrs Eileen Gill, herself a sufferer. All new members are sent an information pack and receive newsletters containing help and advice. Everyone joining is asked to complete a questionnaire. The information from these, which are identified by reference number only, is being collated and passed to a research neurologist for study if permission is given by the member.
New members are asked to supply a large SAE. No charge is made for the material provided but donations towards the cost of printing are welcome. The group has information on the following:
- Commonly used drugs and remedies.
- Tips for treatment.
- Advice on sleep clinic referral.
- Facts on periodic limb movement disorder (PLMD).
