Barthel's Index of Activities of Daily Living

This PatientPlus article is written for healthcare professionals so the language may be more technical than the condition leaflets. You may find the abbreviations list helpful.

Although used fairly universally in hospitals for assessing patients with severe disabilities, more sensitive indices (e.g. Assessment of Motor and Process Skills (AMPS)) are required in the community1,2
