About latanoprost eye drops
| Type of medicine | Prostaglandin analogue |
| Used for | To reduce high pressure within the eye |
| Also called | Xalatan® Xalacom® (a combination of latanoprost with timolol) |
| Available as | Eye drops |
Latanoprost is used to treat open angle glaucoma. Glaucoma is caused by a blockage in the eye which prevents fluid leaving the eye, causing pressure to build up within the eye. This can cause pain and discomfort. Latanoprost works by increasing the outflow of fluid from the eye, relieving the pressure. It can be used alone or alongside other treatments for glaucoma such as timolol.
Latanoprost can also be useful in treating other conditions which cause increased pressure in the eye such as ocular hypertension.
Before using latanoprost eye drops
Before using latanoprost eye drops make sure your doctor or pharmacist knows:
- If you are pregnant, trying for a baby or breast-feeding.
- If you have had surgery on your eye to replace or remove the lens (such as in cataract removal).
- If you suffer from eye problems such as eye pain, dry eyes, blurred vision, irritation or inflammation.
- If you have severe asthma or your asthma is not well controlled.
- If you wear contact lenses or use other eye drops.
- If you are taking other medicines, including those available to buy without a prescription, herbal or complementary medicines.

Getting the most from your treatment
- Use these eye drops exactly as directed by your doctor and read the manufacturer's information leaflet, before beginning your treatment. They are usually applied once daily in the evening.
- If you are using other eye drops, wait 5 minutes between using latanoprost and your other eye drops.
- If you forget to use your eye drops, do not worry, just continue using them when your next dose is due.
- Latanoprost may alter the colour of your eyes. If you notice they have changed, contact your doctor for advice.
- Keep your regular appointments with your doctor so that your progress can be checked.
- If you are having any treatment like an operation or dental treatment, tell the person carrying out the treatment which medicines you are taking or using.
