Ichthammol

About Ichthammol

This belongs to the group of medicines known as preparations for eczema.

Ichthammol is used to treat certain types of eczema and control itching.

Ichthammol is available in ointment form and together with zinc in cream form.

Before using Ichthammol

Before using any of this preparation make sure your doctor or pharmacist knows:

  • if you have ever had an allergic reaction to this or any of the ingredients listed on the packaging of this preparation

How to use Ichthammol

  • Always read the instructions on the container, if possible, before using the preparation.
  • Ichthammol is usually applied to the affected area one to three times a day.

Getting the most from your treatment

  • Avoid contact with the eyes, if any of this preparation gets into the eyes rinse thoroughly with warm water.
  • Some preparations of ichthammol contain lanolin, check with your pharmacist if you are allergic to this.
  • Avoid contact with clothing as ichthammol will stain.
  • The following can make any itching you may be experiencing worse: extremes of temperature, wearing rough or irritating clothing, such as wool, and drinking alcohol.

Can Ichthammol cause problems?

This preparation is unlikely to cause side effects unless you are allergic to one of the ingredients.

If your skin condition gets worse after using ichthammol, or if you develop a rash, stop using the preparation and speak to your doctor or pharmacist.

How to store Ichthammol

  • Keep out of reach of children.
  • Store in a cool, dry place, away from direct light and heat.
  • Never keep out of date or unwanted medicines. Discard them safely out of the reach of children or take them to your local pharmacist who will dispose of unwanted medicines for you.
