About topical piroxicam

Type of medicineTopical non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID)
Used forTreating pain and swelling due to strains and sprains, or arthritis in joints
Also calledFeldene® gel
Available asGel

Piroxicam is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (also known as an NSAID). It is used topically (applied directly onto the skin) to ease muscular pains, sprains, strains or arthritis pain in the hands or knees.

It works by being absorbed through the skin into the underlying tissues where it prevents the production of chemicals which cause pain and inflammation.

Before using topical piroxicam

Before using topical piroxicam make sure your doctor or pharmacist knows:

  • If you are pregnant, trying for a baby or breast-feeding.
  • If you have ever had an unusual reaction after taking or using any other non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) such as aspirin, diclofenac, ibuprofen or naproxen.
  • If you suffer from asthma or breathing problems.
  • If you have kidney or liver problems.

How to use topical piroxicam

  • Before beginning treatment, read the manufacturer's printed information leaflet from inside the pack.
  • Apply a thin layer of gel and gently massage it into the affected area only. Wash your hands well afterwards.
  • Your doctor or pharmacist will recommend how often and for how long to use topical piroxicam, but this is usually 3 or 4 times a day and for no more than 4 weeks unless on your doctor's advice.
  • Do not use topical piroxicam near your eyes, inside your nose, or let it come into contact with any inflamed or broken skin.
  • Do not use this gel on any area that is covered by a bandage, dressing or sticking plaster.
  • If you forget to apply piroxicam at your usual time, apply it as soon as you remember.

Getting the most from your treatment

  • Piroxicam may cause your skin to become more sensitive to sunlight during treatment. Do not use sunbeds, and protect any treated areas from strong sunlight.
