|
About zaleplon
| Type of medicine | Hypnotic |
| Used for | Insomnia (difficulty sleeping) |
| Also called | Sonata |
| Available as | Capsules |
Zaleplon works by acting on receptors in the brain that are involved in the release of chemicals that cause sleepiness and control anxiety. Increasing the amount of chemicals released in the brain reduces anxiety and causes relaxation of the muscles therefore helping to promote sleep.

Before taking zaleplon make sure your doctor or pharmacist knows:
- If you suffer from liver problems
- If you suffer from sleep apnoea (temporary stopping of breathing during sleep)

Can zaleplon cause problems
Along with their useful effects all medicines can cause unwanted side effects, which usually improve as your body adjusts to the new medicine. Speak with your doctor or pharmacist if any of the following side effects continue or become troublesome.
| Side-effects | What can I do if I experience this |
| Drowsiness, dizziness | Make sure your reactions are normal before driving, operating machinery or doing any other jobs which could be dangerous if you were not fully alert. Avoid alcohol; it will increase any feelings of drowsiness. |
| Nausea | Eat little and often. Stick to simple foods such as dry toast. |
Other side-effects include forgetfulness, unsteadiness, weakness, reduced concentration, hearing, vision and speech disturbances and skin reactions. If you experience these or any other worrying symptoms which you think may be due to this medicine, discuss them with your doctor or pharmacist.
Important: If you experience unusual talkativeness, excitement or aggressive behaviour contact your doctor as soon as possible.
