Ipratropium Nasal
About ipratropium nasal
This belongs to the group of medicines known as antimuscarinics.
Ipratropium helps to relieve a runny nose by reducing the amount of mucus and water produced. It is used to treat a persistently runny nose associated with rhinitis which may be caused by an allergy.
Ipratropium is available in nasal spray form.
It is also sometimes known as: Rinatec. You may notice the use of either of these names on the packaging of your medicine.
Before using ipratropium nasal
Before using any of this preparation make sure your doctor or pharmacist knows:
- if you are pregnant, trying for a baby or breast-feeding
- if you suffer from prostatic hypertrophy (an enlarged prostate gland)
- if you suffer from glaucoma
- if you suffer from cystic fibrosis
- if you have ever had an allergic reaction to this or any other medicine
- if you are taking any other medicines, including those available to buy without a prescription, herbal or complementary medicines.
How to use ipratropium nasal
- Blow your nose gently
- Shake the container and remove cap
- Tilt your head back and insert the nozzle of the spray into the nostril, taking care to keep the canister upright as shown in the instruction leaflet. Push down firmly on the canister to administer one puff and as you do so, sniff hard to encourage the preparation into the nose
- If a second dose is required, administer another dose as described above
- Repeat above procedure for the other nostril
- Wipe the nozzle with a clean tissue and replace the cap immediately after use
Repeat this procedure two to three times a day or as directed by your doctor.
Getting the most from your treatment
- This medicine is for you. Never give it to others even if their condition appears to be the same as yours. Sharing a nasal spray with someone else can spread infection.
- Do not use more than your doctor or pharmacist recommends. This may cause your nose to become more stuffy and also increases the risk of side effects.
- Avoid getting ipratropium nasal spray in your eyes. If you accidentally get any of this preparation in your eyes, rinse immediately with plenty of water.
- If you find that you need to use the spray more frequently or use more of it to achieve the same benefit then contact your doctor.
Can ipratropium nasal cause problems?
Along with their useful effects all medicines can cause unwanted side effects. These usually improve as your body adjusts to the new medicine. Speak to your doctor or pharmacist if any of the following side effects continue or become troublesome.
Nasal dryness and irritation, nose bleeds, sore or dry throat, dry mouth, headache.
If you experience any other worrying side effects, which you think may be due to this medicine, discuss them with your pharmacist.
How to store ipratropium nasal
- Keep out of reach of children.
- Store in a cool, dry place, away from direct light and heat.
- Never keep out of date or unwanted medicines. Discard them safely out of the reach of children or take them to your local pharmacist who will dispose of unwanted medicines for you.
