About nedocromil

Type of medicine Anti-asthmatic
Used for Asthma
Also called Tilade
Available as Inhaler

It is not fully understood how nedocromil works. It can be used to treat asthma, especially asthma triggered by allergies.

Before taking nedocromil

Before taking nedocromil make sure your doctor or pharmacist knows:

  • If you are pregnant, trying for a baby or breast-feeding.

How to take nedocromil

  • Use nedocromil exactly as directed by your doctor.
  • Always read the manufacturer's information leaflet, if possible, before beginning treatment.
  • Use your inhaler at regular intervals to get the best effects from your medicine.

Getting the most from your treatment

  • Keep your regular doctors appointments so your progress can be monitored.
  • It may take four to six weeks after beginning treatment with Nedocromil before your condition begins to improve.
  • Do not stop using nedocromil without speaking to your doctor first.
  • Nedocromil is not a reliever, it does not work quickly enough to relieve an asthma attack that has already started. Your doctor will prescribe another inhaled medicine for you to use if you get an attack. Make sure that you keep it with you all the time.
  • Nedocromil may occasionally cause hoarseness. Rinsing the mouth out with water and spitting out after each dose (or brushing a child's teeth) may help to prevent irritation.
  • Do not smoke. Smoking causes severe irritation and damage to the lungs. It will make your condition worse and will reduce the beneficial effects of your medication.

Can nedocromil cause problems?

Along with their useful effects all medicines can cause unwanted side effects, which usually improve as your body adjusts to the new medicine. Speak with your doctor or pharmacist if any of the following side effects continue or become troublesome.

Common side-effects What can I do if I experience this
Feeling or being sick Drink plenty of liquid. Stick to simple foods such as dry toast.
Headache Ask your pharmacist for a suitable painkiller
Indigestion Ask your pharmacist for a suitable antacid

Other side effects include coughing, irritation in the throat, tummy pain or a bitter taste.

How to store nedocromil

  • Keep all medicines out of the reach of children.
  • Store in a cool, dry place, away from direct heat and light.

PS - Health and Poverty

Perhaps the biggest cause of ill health in the world is poverty. Help to Make Poverty History. For example, why not lend some of your money to disadvantaged communities to enable them to trade their way out of poverty through schemes such as Shared Interest.
