About bambuterol

Type of medicineSelective beta2 agonist
Used forAsthma and similar conditions
Also calledBambec®
Available asTablets

Bambuterol can be used to treat breathing problems in people with asthma and other lung-related problems.

It works by opening up the air passages in the lungs so that air can flow into the lungs more freely. By doing so it helps to relieve symptoms such as coughing, wheezing and shortness of breath.

Before taking bambuterol

Before taking bambuterol make sure your doctor or pharmacist knows:

  • If you are pregnant, trying for a baby or breast-feeding.
  • If you have liver or kidney problems.
  • If you have hyperthyroidism (an overactive thyroid gland).
  • If you have heart disease or any other heart problems.
  • If you have diabetes.
  • If you have hypertension (high blood pressure).
  • If you are taking other medicines, including those available to buy without a prescription, herbal or complementary medicines.
  • If you have ever had an allergic reaction to this or any other medicine.

How to take bambuterol

  • Before beginning treatment, read the manufacturer's printed information leaflet.
  • Take bambuterol exactly as directed by your doctor.
  • Try to take bambuterol at the same time each day to avoid missing any doses. Take your dose just before bedtime.
  • If you do forget to take a dose, take one as soon as you remember unless it is nearly time for your next dose. Do not take two doses at the same time to make up for a missed dose.

Getting the most from your treatment

  • Keep your regular doctor's or clinic appointment so your progress can be monitored.
  • Do not stop taking this medicine without speaking to your doctor first.
  • If your usual dose of bambuterol does not provide relief from your symptoms, contact your doctor straight away.
  • Do not smoke as smoking causes severe irritation and damage to the lungs. It will make your condition worse and will reduce the beneficial effects of this medication.
  • If you have diabetes you may need to check your blood glucose levels more regularly as this preparation can affect the levels of sugar in your blood.
  • If you buy any medicines, check with a pharmacist that they are safe to take with bambuterol.
  • If you are having any treatment like an operation or dental treatment, tell the person carrying out the treatment which medicines you are taking.
