About Beclometasone Nasal Spray

This belongs to the group of medicines known as corticosteroids.

Beclometasone Nasal Spray is used to prevent and relieve allergic rhinitis (inflammation of the inside of the nose) commonly caused by hayfever and other allergies.

Exposure to irritants such as plant pollens, pet fur or pollution can cause the body to produce a chemical called histamine. The release of histamine causes the lining of the nose to become swollen and itchy which in turn causes sneezing, and a sore and continually runny nose.

Beclometasone reduces inflammation and swelling and so relieves congestion, itching, sneezing, irritation and discomfort.

Beclometasone is also written as Beclomethasone, you may notice either spelling on the packaging.

It is also sometimes known as: Beconase; Beconase Hayfever; Care Hay Fever Relief Nasal Spray; Nasobec; Pollenase Hayfever; Vivabec. You may notice the use of any of these names on the packaging of your medicine.

Before using Beclometasone Nasal Spray

Before using Beclometasone Nasal Spray make sure your doctor or pharmacist knows:

• if you are pregnant, trying for a baby or breast-feeding
• if you have recently had surgery on your nose or recently suffered from a nasal infection
• if you suffer from glaucoma
• if you have ever had an allergic reaction to this or any other medicine
• if you are taking any other medicines, including those available to buy without a prescription, herbal and complementary medicines.

How to use Beclometasone Nasal Spray

Always read the manufacturer's information leaflet, if possible, before beginning treatment.

1. Blow your nose gently
2. Shake the container and remove cap.
3. Tilt your head back and insert the nozzle of the spray into the nostril, taking care to keep the canister upright as shown in the instruction leaflet. Push down firmly on the canister to administer one puff as you sniff in.
4. If a second dose is required, administer another puff
5. Repeat in the other nostril if you have been instructed to use Beclometasone in both nostrils
6. Wipe the nozzle with a clean tissue and replace the cap immediately after use

Getting the most from your treatment

• Use Beclometasone Nasal Spray exactly as directed by your doctor or pharmacist.
• Beclometasone Nasal Spray should only be used by one person.
• Do not use Beclometasone Nasal Spray more often than your doctor or pharmacist recommends. This can increase the risk of side effects.
• Beclometasone Nasal Spray is not recommended for use in children under six years old.
• If you are using Beclometasone Nasal Spray to relieve the symptoms of hayfever, your doctor may recommend that you start using the nasal spray two to three weeks before the hayfever season starts.
• Avoid getting Beclometasone Nasal Spray in your eyes. If you accidentally get any Beclometasone in your eyes, rinse immediately with plenty of water.
• Beclometasone Nasal Spray is for you. Never give it to others even if their condition appears to be the same as yours.
• Never use more than the prescribed dose. If you suspect you or someone else has used too much Beclometasone Nasal Spray, contact your doctor or go to the accident and emergency department of your local hospital. Always take the container with you, if possible, even if empty.

Can Beclometasone Nasal Spray cause problems?

Along with their useful effects all medicines can cause unwanted side effects. These usually improve as your body adjusts to the new medicine. Speak to your doctor or pharmacist if any of the following side effects continue or become troublesome.

Dryness and irritation of the nose and throat, mild nose bleeds, disturbance of taste and smell, headache.

If you experience any other worrying side effects, which you think may be due to this medicine, discuss them with your pharmacist.

How to store Beclometasone Nasal Spray

• Keep out of reach of children.
• Store in a cool, dry place, away from direct light and heat.
• Never keep out of date or unwanted medicines. Discard them safely out of the reach of children or take them to your local pharmacist who will dispose of unwanted medicines for you.
