Clindamycin lotion/solution

  • Clindamycin lotion or solution is used to treat acne (spots).
  • The most common side effect is itching and irritation where it is applied.
  • If you have dry skin the lotion is best, if you have greasy skin solution is best.
  • If you suffer from diarrhoea during treatment report this to your doctor straight away.

Clindamycin works by killing a wide range of bacteria which can contribute to acne (spots).

Before using clindamycin lotion or solution

Before using clindamycin lotion make sure your doctor or pharmacist knows:

  • If you are pregnant, trying for a baby or breast-feeding.
  • If you have ever had an allergic reaction to this or any other medicine.

How to use clindamycin lotion or solution

  • Use as directed by your doctor.
  • This medicine is for external use only. Do not put it in your mouth or swallow it. If you do accidentally swallow it tell your doctor immediately or contact the accident and emergency department of your local hospital

Getting the most from your treatment

  • Do not pick or squeeze spots because this can spread the infection to other pores and cause scarring.
  • Wash your face with luke warm water and mild soap. Do not scrub your skin as this can make the acne worse.
  • If you wear make-up use a non-comedogenic (will not block pores) product sparingly
  • Diet is not thought to affect acne, however if you do notice that certain foods make your spots worse then it may be best to avoid them.

Can clindamycin lotion or solution cause problems

Along with their useful effects all medicines can cause unwanted side effects, which usually improve as your body adjusts to the new medicine. Speak with your doctor or pharmacist if any of the following side effects continue or become troublesome.

Common side-effects What can I do if I experience this
Dry skin If your skin is usually dry anyway, the lotion is better for you, because it wil not dry your skin. If your skin is usually greasy you may benefit from the solution because this will dry the skin.
Stinging after application As you get used to the medicine this may improve.
Diarrhoea If this occurs speak with your doctor or pharmacist immediately.

How to store clindamycin lotion or solution

  • Keep all medicines out of the reach of children.
  • Store in a cool, dry place, away from direct heat and light.

  • Keep all medicines out of the sight and reach of children.
  • Make sure that the person prescribing this medicine knows about any other medicines that you are taking. This includes medicines you buy and herbal and homeopathic medicines.
  • If you buy any medicines check with a pharmacist that they are safe to take with your other medicines.
  • Before using this medicine tell your doctor if you have ever had an allergic reaction after taking any medicine.
  • If you are having any treatment like an operation or dental treatment tell the person carrying out the treatment which medicines you are taking.
  • Always read the printed information leaflet that comes with your medicine.
  • This medicine is for you. Never give it to other people even if their condition appears to be the same as yours.
  • Never keep out of date or unwanted medicines. Take them to your local pharmacy which will dispose of them for you.
  • If you have any questions about this medicine ask your pharmacist.
