Mupirocin works by killing bacteria (especially those called Staphylococcus), which cause skin infections.

Before using mupirocin

Before using mupirocin make sure your doctor or pharmacist knows:

  • If you are pregnant, trying for a baby or breast-feeding.
  • If you suffer from kidney problems.
  • If you are taking or using any other medicines, including those available to buy without a prescription, herbal or complementary medicines.
  • If you have ever had an allergic reaction to this or any other medicine.

How to use mupirocin

  • Before beginning treatment, read the manufacturer's printed information leaflet.
  • Wash the affected area with soap and water, then dry thoroughly.
  • Apply a small amount of mupirocin and gently rub it onto the affected area, up to three times a day for up to 10 days, or as directed by your doctor.
  • The treated areas may be covered with a gauze dressing if required.
  • To help clear up the infection completely, keep using the mupirocin for the full course of treatment, even if your symptoms disappear.
  • Try not to miss applying mupirocin. If you do, apply it as soon as you remember.

Getting the most from your treatment

  • Take special care to avoid getting any into the eyes. If you do get any in your eyes rinse well with warm water.
  • If your skin infection does not improve within five days, or if it becomes worse, check with your doctor.
  • At the end of your course of treatment, if your symptoms have not gone away talk to your doctor before using any more.
  • If you are having any treatment like an operation or dental treatment, tell the person carrying out the treatment that you are using mupirocin.

Can mupirocin cause problems?

Along with their useful effects all medicines can cause unwanted side effects, which usually improve as your body adjusts to the new medicine.

How to store mupirocin

  • Keep all medicines out of the reach and sight of children.
  • Store in a cool, dry place, away from direct heat and light.

Important information about all medicines


  • If you suspect that you or someone else has swallowed some of this cream or ointment, go to the accident and emergency department of your local hospital at once. Take the container with you, even if it is empty.
  • This medicine is for you. Never give it to other people even if their condition appears to be the same as yours.
  • Never keep out of date or unwanted medicines. Take them to your local pharmacy which will dispose of them for you.
  • If you have any questions about this medicine ask your pharmacist.
