Carmellose Sodium

About Carmellose Sodium

This belongs to the group of medicines known as mucoprotectants.

Ulcers of the mouth (looking like a white spot) are a nuisance and can be very painful. Their cause is not fully understood, but they may happen when a small cut in the mouth occurs.

Carmellose sodium sticks to the inside of the mouth acting as a protective layer over the ulcers allowing them to heal underneath.

Carmellose sodium is available as a paste, and as a powder which can be sprinkled onto the affected area.

It is also sometimes known as: Orabase Paste; Orahesive Powder. You may notice the use of any of these names on the packaging of your medicine.

Before using Carmellose Sodium

Before taking any of this medicine make sure your doctor or pharmacist knows:
  • if you have ever had an allergic reaction to this or any other medicine

How to use Carmellose Sodium

  • Apply to the affected area when necessary and as directed after meals.
  • If you have been supplied the paste, apply it onto affected area until the paste sticks and forms a smooth, slippery film. It should be pushed onto the surface and not rubbed or spread because this will make it crumble and gritty and it will not stick. Enough should be used to cover the affected area.
  • If you have been supplied the powder, it should be sprinkled over the affected area as directed.

Getting the most from your treatment

  • It is important to keep the area being treated covered with this preparation all of the time, if possible. Apply at least four times a day, after meals, last thing at night and first thing in the morning.

Can Carmellose Sodium cause problems?

Side effects from this preparation are very unlikely.

If you experience any worrying or troublesome side effects discuss them with your pharmacist.

How to store Carmellose Sodium

  • Keep all medicines out of the reach of children.
  • Store in a cool, dry place, away from direct heat and and light.
  • Never keep out of date or unwanted medicines. Discard them safely out of the reach of children or take them to your pharmacist who will dispose of them for you.

PS - Health and Poverty

Perhaps the biggest cause of ill health in the world is poverty. Help to Make Poverty History. For example, why not lend some of your money to disadvantaged communities to enable them to trade their way out of poverty through schemes such as Shared Interest.
