About carmellose sodium

Type of medicineMucoprotectant
Used forMouth ulcers
Also calledOrabase®
Orahesive®
Available asOral paste and powder

Ulcers of the mouth are a nuisance and can be very painful. Their cause is not fully understood, but they may happen when a small cut in the mouth occurs.

Carmellose sodium sticks to the inside of the mouth acting as a protective layer over the ulcer, allowing it to heal underneath.

Before using carmellose sodium

Before using carmellose sodium make sure your doctor or pharmacist knows:

  • If you are taking other medicines, including those available to buy without a prescription, herbal or complementary medicines.
  • If you have ever had an allergic reaction to this or any other medicine.

How to use carmellose sodium

  • Before beginning treatment, read the manufacturer's printed information leaflet.
  • Apply this preparation to the affected area whenever necessary. It is usually best applied after meals.
  • If you have been supplied the paste, apply it on to the affected area until the paste sticks and forms a smooth, slippery film. It should be pushed on to the surface and not rubbed or spread because this will make it crumble and gritty and it will not stick. Enough should be used to cover the affected area.
  • If you have been supplied the powder, it should be sprinkled over the affected area as directed.

Getting the most from your treatment

  • Try to keep the area being treated covered with this preparation at all times.

Can carmellose sodium cause problems?
