Before taking clomifene
Before taking clomifene make sure your doctor or pharmacist knows:
- If you think you may be pregnant.
- If you have liver problems.
- If you have been told you have ovarian cysts or uterine fibroids.
- If you have been told you have polycystic ovary syndrome.
- If you have been told you have a hormone-dependent tumour.
- If you have heavy or unusual menstrual periods.
- If you are taking other medicines, including those available to buy without a prescription, herbal or complementary medicines.
- If you have ever had an allergic reaction to this or any other medicine.
How to take clomifene
- Before beginning treatment, read the manufacturer's printed information leaflet.
- Take your medication exactly as directed by your doctor. Clomifene is taken in cycles of 5 days. Your doctor will tell you on which day to start taking each cycle.
- Try to take clomifene at the same time each day to avoid missing any doses.
- If you forget a dose, talk to your doctor as you may need to change your treatment cycle. Do not take two doses together to make up for a forgotten dose.
Getting the most from your treatment
- Keep your regular doctor's appointment so your progress can be monitored.
- Clomifene is not recommended for long term use and is usually only used over a maximum of six menstrual cycles.
- If you are having an operation or dental treatment, tell the person carrying out the treatment which medicines you are taking.
- If you buy any medicines, check with a pharmacist that they are safe to take with your other medicines.
Can clomifene cause problems?
Along with their useful effects, most medicines can cause unwanted side-effects although not everyone experiences them. These usually improve as your body adjusts to the new medicine, but speak with your doctor or pharmacist if any of the following side-effects continue or become troublesome.
| Possible side-effects | What can I do if I experience this |
| Hot flushes | Wear light clothes and try to keep yourself cool |
| Stomach pain or discomfort, feeling bloated | If this is severe, speak with your doctor |
If you experience any other symptoms which you think may be due to this medicine, speak with your doctor or pharmacist.
How to store clomifene
