Clomifene


  • Clomifene is used to treat some types of infertility in women who are not ovulating properly.
  • Clomifene is not recommended for long term use and is usually only used over a maximum of six menstrual cycles.
  • If you experience any problems with eyesight, such as blurred vision, spots or flashes in front of the eyes, speak with your doctor as soon as possible.

Clomifene works by stimulating the release of eggs from the ovary. Clomifene is used to treat some types of infertility in women who are not ovulating properly.

Before taking clomifene

Before taking clomifene make sure your doctor or pharmacist knows:

  • If you think you may be pregnant.
  • If you have liver problems.
  • If you have been told you have ovarian cysts or uterine fibroids.
  • If you have been told you have polycystic ovary syndrome.
  • If you have been told you have a hormone-dependent tumour.
  • If you have heavy or unusual menstrual periods.
  • If you are taking other medicines, including those available to buy without a prescription, herbal or complementary medicines.
  • If you have ever had an allergic reaction to this or any other medicine.

How to take clomifene

  • Before beginning treatment, read the manufacturer's printed information leaflet.
  • Take your medication exactly as directed by your doctor. Clomifene is taken in cycles of 5 days. Your doctor will tell you on which day to start taking each cycle.
  • Try to take clomifene at the same time each day to avoid missing any doses.
  • If you forget a dose, talk to your doctor as you may need to change your treatment cycle. Do not take two doses together to make up for a forgotten dose.

Getting the most from your treatment

  • Keep your regular doctor's appointment so your progress can be monitored.
  • Clomifene is not recommended for long term use and is usually only used over a maximum of six menstrual cycles.
  • If you are having an operation or dental treatment, tell the person carrying out the treatment which medicines you are taking.
  • If you buy any medicines, check with a pharmacist that they are safe to take with your other medicines.

Can clomifene cause problems?

Along with their useful effects, most medicines can cause unwanted side-effects although not everyone experiences them. These usually improve as your body adjusts to the new medicine, but speak with your doctor or pharmacist if any of the following side-effects continue or become troublesome.

Important: If you experience any problems with eyesight, such as blurred vision, spots or flashes in front of the eyes, speak with your doctor as soon as possible.

If you experience any other symptoms which you think may be due to this medicine, speak with your doctor or pharmacist.

How to store clomifene

  • Keep all medicines out of the reach and sight of children.
  • Store in a cool, dry place, away from direct heat and light.

Important information about all medicines


  • Never take more than the prescribed dose. If you suspect that you or someone else has taken an overdose of this medicine, go to the accident and emergency department of your local hospital at once. Take the container with you, even if it is empty.
  • This medicine is for you. Never give it to other people even if their condition appears to be the same as yours.
  • Never keep out of date or unwanted medicines. Take them to your local pharmacy which will dispose of them for you.
  • If you have any questions about this medicine ask your pharmacist.
