A Gift from Granny (tonsillitis)

by Aymie Lacey

I got tonsy-ly-tus for Christmas last year
Mum said it can spread if a sufferer gets near
My great old Granny decided to give it to me
I only wanted a book or a DVD

Apparently its kon-tay-jus so I need to stay in
I’m being brave and taking it on the chin
The pain is in my throat, and my voice sounds weird
Normally all I get from Granny is a feel of her beard

I went to the surgery to see the nice Dr Shah
He let me poke my tongue out and then go “ahhhh”
He said there were some white spots in my throat
All over my tonsils he put in his notes

He said tonsils are made up of glandular tissues
Not the toilet type though, don’t be confused
They are small and pink, but they can change
Tonsy-ly-tus can make them red and inflamed

He said a virus or bacteria causes the condition
Depending on the type you have you may need medication
You may develop a temperature while you have it
And swallowing can be painful, causing you jip

It’s important to have lots to drink and rest
To ease pain, regular paracetemol is best
Try not to talk too much, your tonsils need sleep
Give it a few days and they’ll admit defeat

So three days after Christmas I’m all fixed
I can now run around and play with my gifts
Although tonsy-ly-tus made me poorly for some time
I got myself all better and able to make this rhyme

Occasionally tonsy-ly-tus decides to return
You spot it easily as the symptoms you’ve learned
The Doctor might decide to take your tonsils out
It's routine for the doctor, nothing to worry about

If you have tonsy-ly-tus don’t be afraid
It will usually clear up in a few days
And for when you are feeling a little bit poorly
Remember the happy ending in my story

PS - Health and Poverty

Perhaps the biggest cause of ill health in the world is poverty. Help to Make Poverty History. For example, why not lend some of your money to disadvantaged communities to enable them to trade their way out of poverty through schemes such as Shared Interest.
