The Weigh Forward

by Pam Davies

Oh no, I've high cholesterol
and foods that are the best of all
are foods that I've discovered I can't eat.

The pies that I enjoyed the most,
have fats of which they do not boast,
I can't allow my mouth and them to meet.

I'd love a sweet with lots of cream,
but wanting sweets like that, it seems,
is fantasy and not to be encouraged.

Better would be fruit that's fresh
and preferably syrup less,
on top of all the rest, I need my roughage!

I have dreams of suet puds,
of breakfast fried and if I could,
I'd make sure that all my dreams came true;

but if I want to live awhile,
I guess I'll have to try to smile,
as low fat spread on wholewheat bread must do.

Oil can be a granted wish,
especially when in a fish,
mackeral or sardines tasty winners.

I enjoy them freshly grilled,
when all my taste buds feel fulfilled,
above all I'm avoiding processed dinners.

I must say that I have found,
there are some tasty foods around,
that needn't taste like cardboard a la carte.

A chicken breast with herby crust,
when all is fresh, a healthy must,
with crispy salad, so good for the heart.

I'll soldier on and reminisce,
of long gone times and fatty biscuits,
pints of prawns and chicken in its skin

and try to smile at what is wise,
the bonus seems to be my size,
without the fat, quite suddenly I'm thin.

It is no longer such a chore,
each day I like it that much more,
no longer seems a diet, more a habit.

Taste buds educated now,
I'd choose a chicken over cow
and fight to wrestle lettuce from a rabbit!

Other changes in my ways,
to keep me healthy all my days,
were things like giving up the dreaded weed,

no cigarette could ever be,
a good idea and so you see,
I've swapped them for the fresh air that I need.

Add to that my excercise,
and I am very nearly wise,
the alchohol I've swapped for lots of water,

and I know my lowered risk,
is thanks to all the things I list
and doing all the things I know I oughta'!

Finally my healthy route
has brought me lots of lovely fruit,
a good excuse to eat 5 bits a day,

so let's agree to change our ways,
a healthy lifestyle really pays
I'm slimmer, fitter, happier TO STAY!

PS - Health and Poverty

Perhaps the biggest cause of ill health in the world is poverty. Help to Make Poverty History. For example, why not lend some of your money to disadvantaged communities to enable them to trade their way out of poverty through schemes such as Shared Interest.
