Bald is Beautiful Too

by Shelley White
(creative writers at www.morewriting.co.uk)
I always used to cry a lot
The boys and girls would stare
I got upset when teased about
The losing of my hair.

It first fell out right at the front
I used to have a fringe
And when it travelled further back
My friends they all would cringe.

I kept it long at sides and back
It really looked a sight
And with just a few tufts on top
It gave my mates a fright.

I never looked in mirrors
Cos it made me sad to see
The thinning wisps upon my head
So sad and solitary.

"I'm not like all the others
It really isn't fair
Why should it be that I'm the one
Who needs a scalp repair?

My classmates make a joke of me
I wish I had their curls
If I could just have my hair back
I'd treasure it like pearls!"

The doctor said "Your loss of hair
Is an immune reaction
Try steroid cream on your bald patch
You may get satisfaction.

I cannot guarantee success
Your immune system's flawed.
But wait three months and you may find
It grows of its own accord.

You should look on the bright side
For in a lot of cases
The hair grows back without treatment
Returning smiles to faces.

Steroid injections sometimes work
But not in every case
Why not try a new hairstyle
That complements your face?"

I sometimes wear a wig or hat
It gets a little sweaty
But I don't mind, I'll suffer that
It's silly to be petty.

I'd rather don my wig
And have a little perspiration
Than go without and be the brunt
Of such humiliation.

All in all it's not so bad
To suffer this condition
It doesn't have to stop me
From having an ambition.

Perhaps I'll be a journalist
An air steward or doctor
Or maybe a librarian
Or a driving instructor.

Who'd have thought a girl like me
Could walk tall in the city?
And though I say it myself
I really am quite pretty!

PS - Health and Poverty

Perhaps the biggest cause of ill health in the world is poverty. Help to Make Poverty History. For example, why not lend some of your money to disadvantaged communities to enable them to trade their way out of poverty through schemes such as Shared Interest.

See also MAKEPOVERTYHISTORY North East for details and links to campaigns against poverty.
