Spot Check!

by Shelley White

Anna was sad cos 'so-called' friends
Made jokes about her spots.
Their favourite saying used to be
'Come on, let's join the dots!'

The spots were sore and fiery red:
A painful combination
On her chin and cheeks and nose
They caused great irritation.

Now Anna had a cunning plan
To make spots go away
All she thought she had to do
Was squeeze them every day.

Mum spied her in the bathroom
Practising her hobby
A fleeting thought passed through her mind
'She looks like Mr Blobby!'

'Take my advice - don't ever pick -
I know this may sound hard -
You're rubbing more infection in
You're likely to get scarred.'

So Anna went to see the doc
These words he did profess
'Your spots are part of growing up
Sometimes they cause you stress.

Acne is the proper name
For your skin's condition
I'll explain to you in simple terms
It isn't nuclear fission!

Your hormones have gone haywire
They tell your glands within
To produce the oil called sebum
Which can block the pores in skin.

Your sebum level's gone berserk
Hair follicles gummy too
This sticky combination
Is why your spots accrue.

Put on this cream, it's just the thing
To clear your blemished skin.
Follow instructions carefully
Your skin's recovery will begin.

Your problem's pretty common
But usually is treatable
Apply the treatment properly
You'll find that it is beatable.

You mustn't try to wash them away -
These spots aren't caused by dirt
In fact too much washing
Can cause dry skin to hurt.

It's a myth that chocs and junk food
Make spots ... they're not connected
But good diet improves wellbeing
And in skin this is reflected.

Just try to remain positive
This stage won't last for ever
In answer to the names you're called
Stay cool - just say 'Whatever!'

PS - Health and Poverty

Perhaps the biggest cause of ill health in the world is poverty. Help to Make Poverty History. For example, why not lend some of your money to disadvantaged communities to enable them to trade their way out of poverty through schemes such as Shared Interest.
