(what's this?)
It's all in the Blood!
by Shelley White
Just look through any microscope
To see what's in your blood
There's plasma and some blood cells too
It's easily understood.
Plasma constitutes sixty per cent
It's mainly made from water
There's proteins, salts and enzymes too
For which it is a porter.
Blood cells make up forty per cent
Bone marrow's where they're made
Red cells, white cells, platelets too
Join in blood cells' brigade.
Haemoglobin's in the red cells -
It makes blood's colour red
Takes oxygen to vital organs
From your feet up to your head.
The fighting of infection's
The job of the white cells
The platelets help our blood to clot
If we cut ourselves.
To constantly make blood cells
Plus ingredients of plasma
Bone marrow must be healthy
'Good food' should be your mantra.
Sometimes you'll have a blood test
If you're feeling out of sorts
The 'lab' will do the testing
Send your doctor the reports.
Perhaps you have anaemia -
A full blood count will show
If your red blood cells'level
Is proving to be low.
Kidney or liver function
Or just plain blood chemistry -
Blood tests may hold the answer
To a patient's medical mystery.
How easily does your blood clot?
Is there imbalance of hormone?
Maybe blood sugar levels
Are near the danger zone?
What's your cholesterol level?
Do you have some inflammation?
A simple blood test may provide
The longed-for explanation.
Are you immune to a certain disease?
What's your level of medication?
Rest assured blood test will give
The vital information.
