Stephen's Sticky-Out Ears

by Shelley White
(creative writers at www.morewriting.co.uk)
Stephen was a happy child
Till other kids at school
Started calling nasty names
That made him feel a fool.

'Lookee here comes Big Ears!'
They often used to shout
Or 'What's the matter Dumbo?'
Cause both his ears stuck out!

'It's not fair! I can't help it!'
Used to be his reply
When 'so-called' friends would taunt him -
'With those ears you could fly!'

His parents said 'This can't go on -
Something must be done
To stop this horrid teasing
Cause for Stephen it's no fun.'

The doctor said that Stephen's ears
Would need an operation
This would then eliminate
His daily aggravation.

'The operation has a name
It's called an 'otoplasty'
After you have had it done
Your life will improve vastly.

'The surgeon removes tissue
From behind each ear,
Stitches it into its new place -
You never need to fear.

'Your ears will then be bandaged
For about ten days or so
Then the stitches are removed
It doesn't hurt you know.

'You'll have to wear a headband
At night for the next two weeks
So you don't by chance bend your ears
Forward during sleep.

'Don't worry, 'cause your hearing's
Not affected by this op
It won't make your ears burn
Or even make them pop!

'The surgeon is a clever man -
Works wonders with his kit
He'll improve your appearance
Make no mistake of it!'

Now Stephen's had his ears remodelled
There's no more fisticuffs
Friends agree he looks just great
No need to wear ear muffs!

PS - Health and Poverty

Perhaps the biggest cause of ill health in the world is poverty. Help to Make Poverty History. For example, why not lend some of your money to disadvantaged communities to enable them to trade their way out of poverty through schemes such as Shared Interest.

See also MAKEPOVERTYHISTORY North East for details and links to campaigns against poverty.
