Meet the Asthma Nurse
by Rosie Peters
Before I met the Asthma Nurse
I used to have a wheezy chest
And often had to have a rest.
While all my friends were running round
I just sat quietly on the ground
Wondering why my chest felt tight
And scared my mates would see my plight.
One day I held my best friend's cat.
My mum said "Charlie! Don't do that!"
Then sure enough my wheeze came back
And brought about a bad attack.
My Mum rushed me to see the nurse
In case I got a good deal worse.
Nurse Jean was kind and smiled at me.
"Please make me better was my plea."
She asked a lot about my chest
And helped me do the peak flow test.
I blew and blew with all my might.
Nurse Jean then checked my weight and height
She seemed to know just what was wrong
And had a word with Dr Strong.
Advice there was for me to heed.
Nurse said "I know just what you need
An inhaler for you young man
And an asthma management plan."
I use my inhaler as she said.
So asthma I no longer dread.
I don't get wheezy when I run
Or chase my friends and have great fun.
Clever nurse has made me better
Mum has sent a thank you letter
I see Nurse Jean from time to time.
So she can check I'm keeping fine.
She teaches me about my chest,
And how to keep my health the best.
Now when my mates are running round
I'm never sitting on the ground
I keep away from my friend's cat.
I'm fine with dogs and my pet rat
I know what things could make me ill
But now I'm well I'm never still.
Thanks to Nurse and her special care
There's no more wheeze and great despair.
