It's Enough to Make you Sick
by Shelley White
(creative writers at www.morewriting.co.uk)
Mum said 'Let's go to the fair!
You can bring your best friend Pippa
You'll have fun, p'raps win a prize
And go on the Big Dipper!'
They hadn't been there very long -
Only managed just one ride
When Pippa started to complain
Of feeling sick inside.
She said 'I've got a headache'
And her face was really pale
Soon after that she vomited
And gave a dreadful wail.
Mum said 'It's all the motion
That's making you feel queer -
Cars, planes and boats are triggers too
Now let's have no more tears!
'Travel sickness is another name
For symptoms such as Pippa's
Unusual movements while travelling
Mostly affects the nippers.
'Jumbled or clashing nerve signals
Are then sent to your brain
From eyes and ears balance mechanism
Your sickness they sustain.
'Help yourself when travelling
To minimise your motion
Sit in the front seat of a car
And deck's middle part on the ocean.
'It's best to breathe in the fresh air
So open up a window
Shut your eyes and try to sleep -
Your book you should forego.
'Look ahead above the horizon
If sleep is hard to come by,
Don't watch moving objects
Such as cars as they pass by.
'Pippa dear don't look so glum
You can always take a pill
To reduce these yucky symptoms
Or prevent you being ill.
'Buy them from a pharmacy
Or your doc can write a script -
Before you start your journey
Make sure you are equipped.
'The pills are antihistamines
They're not hard to swallow
Some of this group can make you drowse -
Even sleep may follow.
'Hyoscine's an alternative -
Stick a patch behind your ear
Six hours before your journey -
Then sickness you'll not fear.
'Acupressure works for some
By using a wristband
Or pressing the inner wrist
Where it joins your hand.'
Now Pippa follows Mum's advice
No longer needs opt-out
When riding in a car or train
Or on a roundabout!
