Althea Park was conceived in the mid 1990s to provide a female only residential alternative to hospital for complex and enduring eating disorder clients, who otherwise had become caught up in a cycle of repeated admissions.

Offering a psycho-social model alongside more standardised intervention, the service affords uniquely individual treatment packages aimed at helping their clients, adolescent or adult, to rediscover a sense of self outside their eating disorder and empower them to return to the community with a sense of purpose.

The service has also established a self harm unit for adolescents and operates it's own 'safe tolerance' approach to harm minimisation. Newcombe House offers 8 places to young people aged 13 - 18 years.

PS - Health and Poverty

Perhaps the biggest cause of ill health in the world is poverty. Help to Make Poverty History. For example, why not lend some of your money to disadvantaged communities to enable them to trade their way out of poverty through schemes such as Shared Interest.

See also MAKEPOVERTYHISTORY North East for details and links to campaigns against poverty.
