The core function of the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) is to establish standards of education, training, conduct and performance for nursing and midwifery and to ensure those standards are maintained, thereby safeguarding the health and wellbeing of the public.
They:

  • Maintain a register of nurses and midwives eligible to practice in the UK.
  • Set standards and information for nursing and midwifery conduct, performance and ethics.
  • Quality assure nursing and midwifery education.
  • Consider allegations of misconduct, lack of competence or unfitness to practise due to ill health.
  • Set standards and provide guidance for local supervising authorities for midwives.
