Lauren's Link is an organisation offering support to parents and carers of drug misusers and was formed due to the tragic death of 16 year old Lauren Rodgers, of heroin abuse.

Lauren's Link aims to:

  • Support families, carers and friends of those experiencing the effects of substance misuse, providing and maintaining weekly support group meetings where they can obtain information and the help they require to live through their problem. Speakers are also invited regularly, ie health service, drug squad, solicitors, and any other relevant professional body.
  • Raise awareness of the problem experienced by families of drug users to statutory, voluntary organisations and the general public.
  • Organise training / education talks and presentations. Members of the support group are involved in the talks, as we feel that no one can speak more passionately than someone who is experiencing the problem.
  • Liaise with statutory and voluntary orgainisations regarding the improvement of existing services and the establishment of new ones.
  • Develop new support services which hope to to include a telephone helpline, outreach work and satellite centres in outlying areas close to the city.
  • Have strong links with other support services in this field.
  • To develop and maintain a sub-project of Lauren's Link to support parents / families bereaved by substance misuse. This project is called 'Angels'.

PS - Health and Poverty

Perhaps the biggest cause of ill health in the world is poverty. Help to Make Poverty History. For example, why not lend some of your money to disadvantaged communities to enable them to trade their way out of poverty through schemes such as Shared Interest.

See also MAKEPOVERTYHISTORY North East for details and links to campaigns against poverty.
