Priory Education Services, part of Priory Group, offers a combination of education, healthcare and support to young people aged between four and twenty five years with ASD (Autistic Spectrum Disorders). The company operate six schools, colleges and a residential unit for adults dedicated to people with ASD.

Many of the schools offer GCSEs and a number of students will progress to further education. The colleges enable students aged between 16 and 20 years the opportunity to continue with both academic, vocational and life skills to enable them to lead independent lives.

Rookery House has recently opened to continue the care and support for young people aged 18 - 25 with Asperger's Syndrome (AS) and related disorders. Development courses are tailored to meet residents' individual needs, from preparation and access to employment strategies and independent living skills, to developing ways to cope with anxieties, including relevant therapies. Rookery House offer typically 3-5 year intensive programmes, on a 52 week placement basis, with the aim of increasing the young adults' independence and ability to make informed choices about their lives.

The majority of young adults will attend courses at local further education colleges, in addition linking with local employers through supported employment agencies provides constructive work experience ranging from practical skills like gardening and animal care through to administration support and retailing. For people with AS, learning to 'be at work' and dealing with everyday situations in a work environment is as important as excelling in their chosen academic fields.

PS - Health and Poverty

Perhaps the biggest cause of ill health in the world is poverty. Help to Make Poverty History. For example, why not lend some of your money to disadvantaged communities to enable them to trade their way out of poverty through schemes such as Shared Interest.

See also MAKEPOVERTYHISTORY North East for details and links to campaigns against poverty.
