The MAP Foundation, an arts in health organisation, aims to break down communication barriers between patients and health professionals. Through creative expression, they achieve a greater awareness of the emotional needs of those with life threatening illness, reducing their sense of isolation.
Michele Angelo Petrone founded the MAP Foundation, a registered charity, in 2002 to help people give expression to their emotional landscape while living with cancer. Michele transformed his own cancer experience through artistic expression. His exhibition and book - 'The Emotional Cancer Journey' - a series of paintings and words depicts his journey through illness. This artwork in conjunction with residencies and workshops has been influential in helping people recognise their own feelings, and come to terms with the complex and painful issues relating to serious illness and dying.
MAP Foundation provides:
- Regional and local workshops using trained facilitators for cancer patients, carers and health professionals.
- Books, pictures and accounts of people's experiences.
- MAP Foundation website.
- Touring exhibitions.
- Talks and lectures.
- Educational training materials on the patient's experience for medical and nursing education.
