Liberty is an independent human rights organisation which works to defend and extend rights and freedoms in England and Wales.

They aim to secure equal rights and freedoms for everyone by:

  • Lobbying government.
  • Working with the media to keep human rights issues in the public eye.
  • Pursuing human rights test cases through the English courts and the European Court of Human Rights, to challenge human rights violations and secure changes in the law.
  • They aim to keep their web-site up-to-date with developments and to provide background information on key civil liberties and human rights issues.
These are just some of the things you can do through their web-site:
  • Get details of their Legal Advice Line, which provides advice and referrals for individuals whose human rights have been abused.
  • Read about Liberty's history - they have been protecting and promoting rights and freedoms since 1934.
  • Order books and other publications online.
  • Find out about Liberty's campaigning and policies through Web: www.liberty-human-rights.org.uk
  • Find out about the Human Rights Act 1998 through web: www.yourrights.org.uk.
  • Find out about your rights in specific subject areas, including policing, privacy and discrimination through web: www.yourrights.org.uk

PS - Health and Poverty

Perhaps the biggest cause of ill health in the world is poverty. Help to Make Poverty History. For example, why not lend some of your money to disadvantaged communities to enable them to trade their way out of poverty through schemes such as Shared Interest.

See also MAKEPOVERTYHISTORY North East for details and links to campaigns against poverty.
