Transplants in Mind (TIM) was founded in November 1991 as an 'umbrella' organisation for charities with an interest in promoting organ donation. Presently there are 30 national charity members each with a representative on the TIM Council. The objects of TIM include the following:
- To promote a wider knowledge, and understanding of, the needs of patients on transplant waiting lists.
- To co-operate with other organisations and statutory bodies with a view to improving the supply of donated organs.
This is achieved mainly through an annual event the National Transplant Week. TIM organises and co-ordinates this week which precedes the British Transplant Games (BTG) which are usually held annually in July. The aim is to increase public awareness of the need for organ donors. People who wish to donate their organs when they die are encouraged to register on the National Organ Donor Register and to carry the multi-organ donor card.
