The Breastfeeding Network aims to be an independent source of support and information for breastfeeding women and others. It also aims to develop an increased awareness of current research on infant feeding and work towards creating a society which affirms the right of all women to breastfeed their baby. The Network offers various training practices, produces a newsletter and keeps members up to date on research. The Breastfeeding Network Supportline is a telephone helpline which operates in the following way.
- Calls are taken by volunteers who have done extensive training and are mothers who have breastfed their babies.
- The telephone system automatically diverts the caller to their nearest breastfeeding supporter.
- Supporters give help and advice over the telephone and will arrange to visit new mothers if possible.
