The Socialist Health Association (SHA) promotes health and well-being and the eradication of inequalities, in the UK and worldwide, through the application of socialist principles to society and government. Members believe that these objectives can best be achieved through collective rather than individual action.

Underlying these objectives are three key themes:

• DEMOCRACY, based on: a) freedom of information, b) election not selection, c) local decision making.
• EQUALITY, based on: a) equality of opportunity, b) affirmative action, c) progressive taxation.
• UNIVERSAL HEALTHCARE, based on: a) meeting patients' needs, b) free at the point of use, c) funded by taxation.

SHA members believe that these objectives can best be achieved through collective rather than individual action. The SHA is affiliated to the Labour Party, the only political organisation which is prepared to entertain this agenda with any prospect of delivering it. SHA members are committed to a broad public health approach to well-being because they consider that the application of medical technology alone will not suffice.

In pursuit of these objectives the SHA arranges conferences and seminars, publishes policies and reports, and provides a platform for debate on health issues. This debate informs SHA contributions to the development of the Labour Party's Health Policy.
