The main duties of the Dental Services Division of the NHSBSA (formally the Dental Practice Board) are to:
- Support the Secretary of State in the form of the Department of Health and the Welsh Assembly Government, in determination of dental policy and strategy.
- Produce statistics and key information for national, regional, Strategic Health Authority, Primary Care Trust and Local Health Board purposes.
- Transfer payments to dentists on behalf of Primary Care Trusts and Local Health Boards.
They pay dentists and protect the interests of dentists and taxpayers by financial and quality audit. They help create greater understanding of primary dental care.
The patient information area of their website describes the Dental Reference Service (DRS) which is responsible for monitoring NHS dental care in England and Wales and providing reports on all NHS dental practices. It also gives information about how to make a complaint about a dentist.
